Do You Need a License for a Bike in Phuket in 2026?

Short answer: you usually do not need a license to rent a bike in Phuket, but legally you do need one to ride.

A lot of tourists still rent and ride without a license. That is common on the island. But rental reality and legal road use are not the same thing.

What matters most

  • Rental shops often hand over bikes without checking for a proper motorcycle license
  • !For legal riding, category A plus an IDP is the safer official setup
  • !Typical fine without proper motorcycle documents: 500 to 1,000 THB
  • Helmets matter a lot at checkpoints
  • ×Category M is not enough in Thailand

What license do you officially need?

Thailand treats scooters and motorbikes as motorcycles for this purpose.

The usual official requirement

  • a valid national driver's license
  • motorcycle category A
  • an International Driving Permit

Important details

  • the documents must be valid and not expired
  • category M is not usually accepted as enough
  • Thailand does not really separate scooters the way some countries do

What happens in practice?

In real life, many tourists still ride without proper bike documents. If the police stop you, the fine is usually around 500 to 1,000 THB. People often keep the checkpoint paper for the next day or two and avoid another fine, but that is local habit, not legal permission.

What police usually focus on

  • whether you are wearing a helmet
  • whether the helmet is fastened
  • whether your documents make sense
  • how you behave during the stop

Where checkpoints usually are

  • between major districts
  • on roads between tourist zones
  • on routes connecting Patong, Karon, Kata, and similar areas

Avoid fake "category add-on" services

Some tourists are offered fake help to "add" a motorcycle category to an IDP. This is a bad idea. If the category in the IDP does not match the national license, it can be treated as document fraud. Thai police are familiar with this trick.

Can you rent a bike without a license?

Usually yes, but that does not automatically make riding legal.

How much is the fine?

Usually around 500 to 1,000 THB.

Can you keep riding after paying?

In practice, often for a day or two with the checkpoint paper, but that is not an official permit.

Does category M work?

No. In Thailand, category A is what matters in practice.
